Global Health Opportunities for Residents

The Department of Family Medicine offers its’ residents opportunities to experience health care on a global level. In recent years, residents have completed clinical electives in several different countries, including Taiwan, China, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Venzuela, Mexico and more. Residents who enroll in an overseas elective during their 2nd and 3rd years can participate in an established elective program, or create their own. Some of the electives include “Maternity Care in Developing Countries” (in Nicaragua and Venezuela), and “Traditional Chinese Medicine” in China.

In addition, the department now offers an Area of Concentration in Global Health. Some of the components of the AOC include a focused project in global health, a course in Travel and Tropical Medicine, and at least 4 weeks of work in a developing country. Residents will have the opportunity to present their project at a regional, national, or even international meeting, and will be required to attend an annual Global Grand Rounds conference.

Residents from other departments at UTMB can participate in global health electives also, depending on their specific department requirements. The Center is glad to provide advice and assistance on request.

Vietnam Trip Report

This trip has given me the opportunities to learn various Vietnamese medical terminologies, analyze the culture more deeply, practice basic clinical skills, widen my medical knowledge, and exchange perspectives with foreign practitioners. I was able to see many abnormalities and disorders that I would never get to see in the U.S. However, I think it would have been more beneficial if I had a more extensive knowledge of the basic medical science. It was amazing to be immersed in such a different environment and I recommend it to anyone who desires an exotic learning experience.
